The Athletics have found a right-hand man for new president of baseball operations Taylor Smith.
Just over two weeks after Smith’s hiring, the A’s have added to their new-look front office by hiring Cam Castro as general manager, the club announced on Wednesday.
“I'm beyond thankful to John Fisher, Taylor Smith, Ross Bowen and the entire Athletics organization for this opportunity,” Castro said. “The A's are a historic franchise with an incredible legacy. I look forward to being a part of the next chapter of A's baseball and developing a team, culture, and organization that our fans will be proud of.”
Castro, 36, arrives from the reigning World Series champion Brewers, with whom he held the title of senior vice president of player development and performance over the past two seasons. He joined Milwaukee in 2019 as a Minor League pitching coach and worked his way up the organizational ladder. After serving as the club’s Minor League pitching coordinator and director of pitching development from 2020-21, Castro was promoted to vice president of player development in '22, quickly becoming a vital part of Brewers GM and president of baseball operations Matt Arnold’s inner circle.
Castro has a long background in pitching dating back to his time working as a throwing trainer at Driveline Baseball in 2016. That expertise will be key for an A’s club that is coming off a 64-98 season and has a clear need for improvements in the pitching department.
Castro’s pairing with Smith also signals the beginning of a new chapter in front office leadership for the A’s as they prepare for their final season playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento before relocating to a new ballpark in Las Vegas, which is expected to be ready for play by Opening Day 2028.
“Cam will be an awesome addition to the front office and a great partner to me in running this organization,” Smith said. “He has experiences and skillsets that will complement me and the very talented people that we already have in the organization. He's one of the best development minds in the game with a proven track record of building the systems and processes that develop a winner.”
