PEORIA, Ariz. -- The A's scored two runs in the first off Mariners ace Felix Hernandez on Sunday and held on for a 5-4 Cactus League victory over a Seattle split squad at Peoria Stadium as Mark Canha contributed a pair of hits and an RBI.
Daniel Vogelbach went 2-for-3 with a double and picked up his second RBI of the Cactus League for the Mariners. He's hitting .350 on the spring.
Hernandez gave up four hits and a pair of runs in three innings in his second start of the spring and now will join Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. Hernandez struck out five with no walks, but he gave up two runs in the first on a run-scoring double by Ryon Healy and an RBI single by Canha.

"That first inning was a little rough, but after that it was fine," Hernandez said. "And the last inning was real good. I'm ready to go."
"The thing with Felix is you have to get to him early, and we did today," A's catcher Stephen Vogt said. "Canha crushed that ball. That was beautiful. Healy had a great at-bat against him as well, so we put together some good at-bats up and down the lineup against him."

Jharel Cotton, making his second start for the A's, went two innings with two hits and a run in a 43-pitch outing. The 25-year-old right-hander walked two and had one strikeout, with the lone run coming when Boog Powell tripled and scored on a groundout by Shawn O'Malley in the second.
Oakland took the lead in the fifth with two runs off Chase De Jong, a right-hander acquired in a trade from the Dodgers on Wednesday. De Jong gave up three hits and two runs (one earned) in his two-inning debut. Jaycob Brugman tripled and scored on Alejandro De Aza's double, with De Aza then crossing the plate when Mariners second baseman Michael Freeman misplayed a grounder by Vogt.

The A's pushed across another run in the eighth with three walks and a double by Renato Nunez off hard-throwing rookie right-hander Thyago Vieira, who had trouble commanding his 99-mph fastball.
Seattle cut the lead to 5-4 in the eighth when D.J. Peterson, a first-round Draft pick in 2013, hit his first homer of the spring off A.J. Puk. Andrew Triggs, competing for the fifth-starter spot for the A's, threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings with one hit and one strikeout.

A's: The A's will enjoy their first off-day of the spring Monday, before returning to action Tuesday against the D-backs. Ace Sonny Gray will be on the mound for his second Cactus League start, with first pitch scheduled for 12:10 p.m. PT. Mariners:Drew Smyly makes his second start of the spring in Monday's 12:10 p.m. PT game against the Rangers at Peoria Stadium. Veterans Nick Vincent and Marc Rzepczynski and hard-throwing youngsters Dan Altavilla and Shae Simmons are among the scheduled relievers. The game will be available live on MLB.TV and ROOT Sports.
