NEW YORK -- For the second straight night Thursday, a Met departed after being struck by a pitch. This time, however, the news was benign.

A night after Jeff McNeil fractured his wrist on a hit by pitch, Robinson Canó took a 92.9-mph José Quijada fastball off his right hand. Canó departed the game immediately, and was gone from Citi Field by the time that the clubhouse was open to media members. But a team spokesman said that the ball struck padding rather than bone, and that Canó was not seriously injured.

With only three games remaining in the season, the Mets do figure to be cautious with Canó. He missed minimal time earlier this year after a pitch struck his left hand, and a significant chunk last season when a ball fractured his right hand. But Canó should be available in some capacity over the Mets’ final three contests.

In 105 games, Canó is batting .260/.312/.434 with 13 home runs. Much of that production has occurred since he returned from the injured list in early September. Since the start of August, Canó is batting .360 in 23 games.
