Cards postseason FAQ: What comes next?

September 29th, 2020

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals are back in the postseason for the second straight year. Here are the answers to some early playoff questions about rosters, seeding, scheduling and more:

What could the postseason roster look like?

Here is one prediction:

C: Yadier Molina, Matt Wieters
1B: Paul Goldschmidt, Rangel Ravelo
2B: Kolten Wong
3B: Matt Carpenter
SS: Paul DeJong
Util.: Tommy Edman
DH: Brad Miller
OF: Dexter Fowler, Harrison Bader, Dylan Carlson, Tyler O’Neill, Austin Dean
Rotation: Kwang Hyun Kim, Adam Wainwright, Jack Flaherty
Bullpen: Daniel Ponce de Leon, Austin Gomber, Andrew Miller, Giovanny Gallegos, Ryan Helsley, Alex Reyes, Génesis Cabrera, Jake Woodford, Johan Oviedo, Tyler Webb, Kodi Whitley

When is the Wild Card Series schedule?

Game 1 is set for Wednesday, with Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) on Thursday and Friday, respectively. There are no days off in this round.

What does their first-round matchup look like?

As the No. 5 seed, the Cardinals will play the No. 4 Padres in San Diego beginning on Wednesday. The Padres went 37-23 with a juggernaut of a lineup that includes Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Mitch Moreland, Wil Myers and former Cardinal Tommy Pham.

And while the Padres are dealing with some injuries on the rotation front, they’re optimistic Dinelson Lamet, a candidate for the Cy Young Award, can take the ball for Game 1. A high-90s fastball pairs with an elite slider and makes Lamet the Padres’ most dominant starting pitcher this season. The Padres have Zach Davies lined up for Game 2, and if necessary, they’re hopeful Mike Clevinger -- their prized Trade Deadline asset who is recovering from a right elbow impingement -- can take the ball for Game 3. The Padres also have a solid bullpen with former Cardinal Trevor Rosenthal at the back end of it.

When must the Cardinals set their roster?

Postseason rosters, like the regular season, will be comprised of 28 players. Each team must set its roster on the morning each round begins.

What about that series against Detroit? Will the Cardinals play it?

No. With their win Sunday, they avoided a trip to Detroit because they’re in the playoffs. Those one or two makeup games were only going to be played if the Cardinals needed to determine a postseason spot. The Cardinals finished their 58-game schedule with a 30-28 record.

What will the Wild Card Series rotation look like?

Kim will start Game 1 on Wednesday, and Wainwright will take his postseason experience to the mound for Game 2 on Thursday in the best-of-three series. If Game 3 is needed, Flaherty will start it, the team announced Monday.

Any injuries of note that could affect the team?

Dakota Hudson’s season ended with a right forearm strain that now requires Tommy John surgery, and Carlos Martínez is on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain, which is unlikely to be healed even if the Cardinals make a deep run. They’re also without reliever John Gant (right groin tightness) for the beginning of the postseason. It’s unclear if he’d be recovered fully enough to join the team later in October.
