ST. LOUIS – The Cardinals on Saturday added outfielder Everson Pereira to their 26-player roster and designated outfielder Nelson Velázquez for assignment.
The Cardinals claimed Pereira off waivers from the White Sox on Thursday. The 25-year-old hit .225 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 27 games this season for the South Siders.
“I feel really good,” Pereira said through an interpreter. “I haven't had the opportunity to meet everyone, but the ones that I met already, they gave me really good vibes.”
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Pereira offers versatility.
“High ceiling, has a real potential,” Marmol said. “Can play all three [outfield] positions. Familiar with center, and it's something that we're looking forward to laying eyes on at this level.”
Pereira, who has also had stints with the Yankees and Rays previously, has a .172 batting average with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 238 career at-bats.
He played left field and batted ninth in the Cardinals’ lineup Saturday against the Rockies.
“I give everything that I have,” Pereira said. “I give my 100% in the field, and I do everything that I have for my team.”
Velázquez hit .216 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 74 at-bats for the Cardinals this season.
