
What happens when a longtime big leaguer hangs up his cleats? Some go on to coach or stay in the sport in an off-field role. Others, they find a new day job or dive way into a new hobby.
Some -- like 10-year infielder Daniel Descalso -- do both.
Now the bench coach for the Cardinals, “Scals” has taken up a love of baking. Specifically, he makes bagels, with as good a name for his start-up as it gets: “ScalsDough.”
Descalso wrote on a new Instagram page late last year that he”never planned on starting a page, but sourdough became something I genuinely love doing.” He’s since posted looks into his kitchen as he learns more about the hobby,
The Cardinals and Descalso have found some magic to begin 2026 despite appearing to commit to a rebuilding year, starting 21-15 behind breakout sensations like Jordan Walker and JJ Wetherholt.
Perhaps some ScalsDough in the morning is the secret. Descalso -- a 2011 World Series champion with St. Louis -- seems to be continuing a day-game tradition of bringing bagels to the park, as he revealed Wednesday in an Instagram story.
