Cardinals prospects propel Surprise to victory

November 4th, 2017

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Cardinals prospects made a strong impression in the Arizona Fall League on Friday as outfielder Oscar Mercado, third baseman and catcher Andrew Knizner led the Surprise Saguaros to a 4-1 win over the Salt River Rafters.
Gameday
The Rafters broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run by Monte Harrison, the Brewers' No. 14 prospect, but Surprise quickly responded in the bottom of the frame.
The Twins' Sean Miller hit an RBI single to tie things up and get the momentum going. With the bases loaded, Mercado, the Cardinals' No. 18 prospect, drove in two with a double to give the Saguaros a two-run lead.
"I was just trying to get something up. Trying to get something to elevate," Mercado said. "I wasn't thinking much, like trying to get a hit, just trying to get my job done."
Mercado spent the 2017 season with Double-A Springfield, and his goals in the AFL are simple.
"I'm just trying to take everything that I learned here and just trying to make it happen during the regular season," Mercado said. "I'm just trying to stay healthy and have fun while I'm out here."
Sosa went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the victory. The Cardinals' No. 12 prospect spent the majority of the year with Class A Advanced Palm Beach, and he is working on his infield diversity during his time in Arizona.

"My position is shortstop, but I'm trying to get better at second and third because it will help me a lot going forward in my career," Sosa says through translator Mercado. "I'm doing really well at those positions while I'm here and just trying to get better."
Knizner supported his teammates and secured the win in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to left field.
The Cardinals' No. 27 prospect showed off his defense behind the plate, throwing out a runner in the first inning and preventing the Rafters from scoring early in the game.
Knizner will represent the Cardinals in the AFL Fall Stars Game on Saturday night at Salt River Fields.
