Prospect acquired in Donovan deal hits for cycle, leads High-A Peoria to 24 runs

The scoreboard at Appleton's Neuroscience Group Field looked more like a football score than a High-A contest.

And at the center of it all was Tai Peete, who hit for the cycle to snap out of an early-season slump to power High-A Peoria past Wisconsin, 24-7, on Thursday night.

The Cardinals' No. 18 prospect saved the hardest leg of his historic night for last, ripping a ninth-inning triple in his final at-bat of the contest to secure the Chiefs' first cycle since 2017.

Jesús Báez (STL No. 20) chipped in with a memorable performance of his own, homering and driving in a career-high six runs during Peoria's 21-hit attack.

Peoria set the tone early, scoring in every inning except the second, but it was a 10-run seventh which Peete capped with a three-run homer that punctuated the outburst. The former Mariner was at the center of everything despite starting the night hitless in his first two plate appearances.

Peete's run toward the cycle began with a double in the fourth and gained steam during Peoria's epic seventh inning. The 20-year-old singled home a run and bookended the frame by slugging his third roundtripper of the season and second in three games.

With his team having already scored 23 runs by the ninth, Peete ended the only remaining suspense by lashing his first triple of the year. Peete's four hits equaled a career high and he drove in four runs for the first time since Sept. 7, 2024, when he was with Single-A Modesto.

Obtained by the Cardinals in early February as part of a three-team trade that sent All-Star Brendan Donovan to Seattle, Peete was off to a slow start with his new organization. The Georgia native entered the night 7-for-36 (.194) with 12 strikeouts.

But Peete had also shown signs of stirring, having gone deep during a multihit, three-RBI night on Sunday. His big game hiked his average 62 points to .256 to go along with a healthy .965 OPS, eight extra-base hits and 12 RBIs.
