Inside the numbers of White Sox impressive win

April 20th, 2019

DETROIT -- A two-game losing streak for the White Sox came to an end Friday night with a 7-3 victory over the Tigers at Comerica Park. Here’s a look by the numbers at the win that evened up the four-game set and highlighted the matchup between the two American League Central division foes.

500
’s career RBIs.

With his two-run double to left during a five-run seventh inning, Abreu reached this milestone. He didn’t really know about the accomplishment until interpreter Billy Russo mentioned it postgame.

“I was just trying to feel comfortable at the plate again, trying to help the team, doing the things I know I can do,” said Abreu through Russo. “I feel very happy about the mark. Thanks to the White Sox organization and the guys, they’re the ones on base.”

The slump Abreu was in over the past 13 games before knocking out two hits.

Abreu pointed to his family as a source of inspiration to overcome the frustration during these occasional tough times in what has been a standout career.

“They are my strength. Even on bad days, they have my back,” Abreu said. “This is a game. It’s my profession but it’s a game.

“When our careers are done, our families will still be with us. In those moments I think about them. All the support they give, that’s what keeps me pushing and helped me through tough moments.”

Changeups thrown by Carlos Rodon.

The White Sox Opening Day starter and ace of the staff was looking for a little more balance mixed in with his devastating slider and fastball. He found that balance Friday, getting five swings and misses on the change per Statcast, striking out six overall.

“It was just a pitch we mixed in,” Rodon said. “We got some contact with it and some swing and miss. It worked out good, the game plan we had. [Catcher] James [McCann] played with this [Detroit] team a few years; knew them pretty well.

“Fastball command was pretty good. Not the best velocity. But the command was there. Defensively I got picked up a couple of times. That helped out.”

1-0
Bench coach Joe McEwing’s record as White Sox manager in 2019.

McEwing managed the team Friday with Rick Renteria serving a one-game suspension stemming from Wednesday’s bench-clearing argument with the Royals. The always upbeat McEwing laughed and answered in the negative when asked if he was keeping the lineup card.

“Good team win all the way around,” McEwing said. “[Rodon] went out and gave us six strong innings and bullpen came in, did a great job. Collectively from an offensive standpoint: 11 hits, lot of key hits, we ran the bases well.”

Distance in feet of Yoan Moncada’s first-inning home run.

It was a new personal high for Moncada, per Statcast, with this blast to center.

“That was a mammoth homer,” Abreu said.

“I haven’t seen a ball travel that far here before,” McEwing said.

The amount of times Ryan Cordell and Yolmer Sanchez reached base from the seventh and eighth spots in the lineup.

Sanchez walked three times, while Cordell had a hit and made a solid leaping catch in right.

Degrees at first pitch Friday, with rain coming later in the contest.

Yet, as has been the case throughout his career, Rodon did not wear an undershirt beneath his jersey.

“You know actually as dumb as this sounds, I thought I would be cold when I got out there, but I was pretty warm every inning,” Rodon said. “I would come in here in between innings. I felt pretty warm out there. Yeah, no T-shirt. It’s fine. It’s just mental games.”

What would it take temperature-wise for Rodon to break out a T-shirt? He hopes to find out someday when the White Sox advance well into October.

“I would like to find out in October for sure,” a smiling Rodon said.
