Santana wins Wilson Defensive Player Award

The Indians' is the 2017 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year at first base. The awards for best defensive player in MLB at each position were announced Friday evening on MLB Network.
The formula used to determine the winner at each position consists of defensive wins above replacement (25 percent), defensive runs saved (25 percent), Inside Edge fielding ratings (20 percent), Inside Edge arm ratings (20 percent) and fielding percentage (10 percent). The formula is different for pitchers and catchers.

Santana, also a designated hitter, appeared at first base in 140 games for the Tribe in 2017, the most in any season of his career. He tied for second in defensive runs saved among MLB first basemen with 10 behind the Reds' Joey Votto (11). The D-backs' and the Red Sox's Mitch Moreland also had 10.

The award is the first defensive honor of Santana's career. His 10 defensive runs saved in 2017 represent a tremendous improvement from the combined DRS of -8 he posted at the position from 2014-16. Santana, 31, led American League first basemen in assists with 95 and double plays started with 16.
