Schmitt rebounds from baserunning gaffe with decisive go-ahead HR

April 25th, 2026

SAN FRANCISCO – angrily pounded his fist into the dirt so hard, he must have bruised a knuckle or three. For the second game in a row Saturday, almost inconceivably, Schmitt was tagged out after rounding second base too far then slipping as he tried to clamber back to the bag, wasting his own leadoff double.

Four innings later, Schmitt had time to round second base slowly and carefully, and the only things he pounded with his fist were a bunch of other fists in the Giants’ dugout after his two-run homer broke a 1-1 tie and keyed a 6-2 victory against the Marlins.

Drew Gilbert also homered off Miami starter Eury Pérez to tie a 1-0 game in the fifth and Heliot Ramos went deep in the eighth, giving the Giants three homers after totaling just four over their first 14 games at Oracle Park this season.

The Marlins scored once in five innings against starter Robbie Ray on a huge stroke of luck. With two outs in the third, Xavier Edwards checked his swing and floated a single over first baseman Rafael Devers to score Agustín Ramírez, who singled to start the inning.

The Giants had other good at-bats against Pérez. Schmitt and Jung Hoo Lee both doubled to start the second, but Schmitt was no longer on base to be driven home.

He slipped after rounding second base on his double and was tagged out. That’s when he took it out on the dirt.

Ray labored during his start. He had just one perfect inning and required 97 pitches to get through 23 hitters, allowing one run on four hits and three walks. Matt Gage earned the win as the first of four Giants relievers to finish out the game.
