CC Sabathia, Dellin Betances ride subway to Yankees' 2026 home opener

April 4th, 2026

You know , right? Hall of Famer, six-time All-Star, Cy Young Award winner, World Series champion with the Yankees in 2009 -- you know who we're talking about.

Here's a fun fact: That guy, a New York baseball legend, rode the subway for the first time on Friday.

To be fair, it isn't that strange. Sabathia grew up in the Bay Area and became a New Yorker via a major free agent contract, well beyond his days of relying on public transportation. It was probably about time, and Sabathia marked the occasion by taking his first trip to Yankee Stadium for his former club's home opener.

Here's the thing: Anyone who has taken the train to Yankee Stadium on a game day will tell you that, upon arrival, it will feel as though every person on earth beat you there. You should bring a buddy, if you can. Preferably one who's literally been there before. Enter , longtime Yankees teammate and bona fide city kid who grew up in Manhattan, went to high school in Williamsburg, and indisputably knows his way around the subway system.

Betances did immediately admit that it had been roughly 20 years since he'd taken the subway -- he had to learn on the fly that the metro card has fallen into disuse -- but we're pleased to report that the pair arrived safe and sound at their old office. Being on hand for a win was really just a bonus.
