Versatile Pinder makes first start in RF, homers

BALTIMORE -- A’s manager Bob Melvin said he’s sure that Chad Pinder could be a solid player if he were at just one position every game. Pinder, though, can do so many different things that putting him in one spot is tough to do.

Pinder entered Wednesday’s game against in the Orioles with a .308 average, and playing right field. That’s the fifth position he’s played this season -- first base, second base, third base and left field are the others -- and last season he became the first Oakland player to start at least one game at every position except pitcher and catcher.

Pinder continued to show his offensive value on Wednesday. He homered to right-center off starter Dan Straily to give the A's an early 1-0 lead, and went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in an eventual 10-3 win.

“We all feel, here as a staff, that [we] just [need to] find a spot for him, and he could be an everyday player,” Melvin said. “I think he’s showing that right now. What works against him is he’s able to pick up somebody at every different position, and he prepares himself for it.”

The versatility makes it harder to be a one-position guy for Pinder, but easier for the manager to find a place for him in the lineup. After all, Melvin can put him just about anywhere.

That, the skipper said, is just not something that you will see every day.

“There’s very few of those guys that can excel in [playing different spots],” Melvin said. “He’s really, really good at what he does right now.”

Pinder’s been doing well at the plate recently. He is hitting .409 (9-for-22) in April, and went 3-for-5 in the first two games of this series. Simply put, Pinder is finally getting a bigger amount of playing time than in his first two, longer seasons in 2017 and '18.

“I think it’s just getting the opportunity. … So he’s finally getting the opportunity, and he’s taking advantage of his opportunity,” Melvin said.
