Outfielder Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies has been named National League Player of the Week for the period ending June 26th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
In seven games last week, Blackmon led the Majors with five home runs, 14 hits, and 30 total bases, while tying for the Major League lead with nine RBI. The 2014 NL All-Star also ranked among League leaders in slugging (1st, .909), runs scored (2nd, 9), hitting (8th, .424), and on-base percentage (9th, .472). Blackmon collected hits in each of his seven games last week and had multi-hit performances in six of those contests. The Texas native extended his hitting streak to seven games in Sunday's series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, helping propel his club to a 9-7 victory in the rubber match of a three-game set at Coors Field with a 2-for-4 performance, which included his 12th home run of the season. He also collected a pair of hits and blasted a home run in Saturday's contest, helping the Rox win by an 11-6 tally. Blackmon's home run led off the game for the Rockies and marked his franchise-record fifth leadoff home run of the season and 17th of his career. His 17 career leadoff homers are currently tied with Curtis Granderson for the most by a Major Leaguer since 2013. On Tuesday, Blackmon tied a career high (four times) by homering twice in Colorado's 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees, becoming the first-ever Rockies player to have a multi-homer performance at Yankee Stadium. Blackmon is currently hitting .304 on the season, which ranks sixth among qualifying NL outfielders. This is his third career Player of the Week honor (also: September 16-22, 2013 and March 31-April 6, 2014).
Other noteworthy performances last week included: Blackmon's Colorado teammates DJ LeMahieu (.448, 6 R, 13 H, HR, 4 RBI, .586 SLG, .515 OBP) and Jorge De La Rosa (2-0, 3.00 ERA, 9 SO, 12.0 IP); Corey Seager (.500, 5 R, 12 H, HR, .833 SLG, .520 OBP) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Cincinnati's Anthony DeSclafani (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 11 SO, 15.0 IP); Miami's Jose Fernandez (1-0, 0.64 ERA, 20 SO, 14.0 IP); and Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke (2-0, 0.66 ERA, 6 SO, 13.2 IP).
