Chase Burns' phenomenal breakout season is over, as the Reds announced Sunday that the young right-hander had been placed on the 15-day IL with a right groin strain.
Burns, a first-time All-Star in 2026, will end the year 15-3 with a 2.86 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 154 1/3 innings, a clear bright spot for a club that entered play on Sept. 20 with the third-highest staff ERA in baseball (4.87).
Despite the somewhat abrupt ending, Burns was unlikely to make any more major contributions -- due to his much lighter workload in 2025 (109 1/3 IP across three levels of the Minors and his first 13 MLB appearances), the Reds had limited him to just three innings in each of his three September starts.
To take Burns' spot on the roster, the Reds selected the contract of right-hander Carson Spiers from Triple-A Louisville; veteran outfielder TJ Friedl was designated for assignment.
