DENVER -- Rockies left-handed pitcher Chris Rusin chose health over the desire to follow up one of his best starts of the season.
Rusin (2-4, 4.12 ERA) informed the club that he felt more sore than normal after holding the Dodgers scoreless for six innings of a 1-0 victory Wednesday, and an MRI on Monday revealed a left shoulder strain. The club placed him on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, so his follow-up start will be delayed.
"You want to get back out there, but these things happen," Rusin said. "It's baseball. You have to deal with it.
"I take pride in taking care of my arm, so this is kind of frustrating."
Rusin has been smart about his health this season. He entered Spring Training with no Minor League options and unsure if he would make the starting rotation, but he reported a left middle finger pulley tendon problem early in the spring. When he healed, the spot for him was in the bullpen, but he eventually earned his way into the rotation.
Rusin, whose DL stint was backdated to June 9, said he was unsure of the timetable, and won't know until he begins throwing.
The Rockies recalled righty relief pitcher Miguel Castro (0-0, 3.75 ERA, 10 strikeouts in 12 Major League innings) from Triple-A Albuquerque to replace Rusin.
Wolters returns
The Rockies also activated rookie catcher Tony Wolters from the 7-day concussion disabled list and optioned catcher Dustin Garneau to Albuquerque on Tuesday. Wolters was hitting .217 and was among the Majors' leaders in advanced pitch-framing stats when he was injured when he was struck in the mask with a foul ball June 2.
Wolters saw the injury as a freak occurrence. Unlike veteran Nick Hundley, who missed time earlier this season when he was hit with a foul tip and had to add extra padding to his mask, Wolters said his only adjustment is to be aware.
"When I think he's going to foul one off, I just need to move a little face side to side -- it doesn't get you straight on," Wolters said. "You can get a feeling, 'Oh, he's swinging,' and you can kind of move your face."
No word on Reyes
The status of shortstop Jose Reyes, whom MLB suspended through May 31 because of an offseason domestic violence incident, remained uncertain Tuesday. Reyes' 14-day rehab assignment -- negotiated through MLB and the MLB Players Association -- is up Wednesday.
Rockies GM Jeff Bridich declinded to comment, saying he would address the situation Wednesday. An MLB official said the situation was being worked on Tuesday.
Reyes is currently on the restricted list and does not count against the 40-man roster, which is full.
Bergman set for simulated game 
Right-handed reliever Christian Bergman threw a second 40-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday after landing on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique in late May. He is expected to throw a simulated game on Friday in Miami.
"[There's] no timetable, but he's doing well," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "His [bullpen sessions] have gone well, we'll pick it up here in a little bit, and he's still a ways away."
