PHOENIX -- It was not an easy decision for Glenn Sherlock to make, but after 21 years with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, the bench coach is moving on to the Mets, where he will coach third base under manager Terry Collins.
Sherlock was hired by the D-backs in the fall of 1995 by then-manager Buck Showalter. The D-backs were not set to begin play until 1998, and for the next two years, Sherlock served as the organization's catching coordinator and helped scout for the Expansion Draft.
There have only been three regular-season D-backs games in which Sherlock has not been in uniform.
Respected throughout the game for his ability to work with catchers, Sherlock filled a variety of roles on the big league staff, including bullpen coach, first-base and third-base coach and bench coach.
When manager Chip Hale was dismissed one day after the 2016 regular season, his coaching staff was left in limbo until Torey Lovullo was hired as his replacement a little more than two weeks ago.
Lovullo and new GM Mike Hazen decided not to retain the services of third-base coach Matt Williams, assistant hitting coach Mark Grace and bullpen coach Garvin Alston.
Sherlock was told he was a candidate to remain on the staff; however, the Mets offered him a guaranteed position before the D-backs made their final staffing decisions.
"I had 21 great years in Arizona and I'm very thankful for my time with the Diamondbacks," Sherlock told MLB.com. "It will always be a special place for me. When this opportunity with the Mets presented itself, I felt I needed to take it. It's an exciting opportunity for me. I had some good talks with Mike Hazen and Torey Lovullo, and I think the organization there is in good hands."
Sherlock was the final member of the original on-field D-backs staff to remain with the organization throughout its history.
