Rockies Stat of the Day: June 2021

July 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Rockies this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

June 30: Rockies 6, Pirates 2 -- Gray notches the big 5-0
After overcoming a two-run, two-hit first inning, which featured Bryan Reynolds' solo shot, Colorado righty Jon Gray did not give up another hit in his six-inning effort en route to earning the 50th win of his career, all of which have come in a Rockies uniform. He is the seventh pitcher in franchise history to reach that many wins. Given that his sharpness was fleeting, as he dealt with four walks (one intentional), a hit batter and a wild pitch, Gray said, "It's starts like this that I appreciate the most."

June 29: Rockies 8, Pirates 0 -- Elite company for Rox ace
By holding opponents to a combined one run on four hits in 23 innings over his last three starts, Rockies right-hander Germán Márquez has joined Johnny Vander Meer (1938) and Rube Marquard (1911) as the only pitchers since 1893 to produce those numbers over a three-start span.

June 28: Rockies 2, Pirates 0 -- Daza dazzles at home
Rookie outfielder Yonathan Daza tripled and doubled, as he continued to make himself at home at Coors Field. He has hit safely in 14 straight home contests, during which he is 23-for-58 (.397) with three doubles, two triples, one home run and 10 RBIs. Since May 11, Daza has hit safely in 21 of his last 23 home games (37-for-86, .430).

June 27: Brewers 5, Rockies 0 -- Starters improve on road trip
Chi Chi González held the Brewers to one run, on Keston Hiura's third-inning solo homer, in five innings of a strong start in Sunday's series finale. Through the five-game road trip -- two at Seattle, three at Milwaukee -- Rockies starters posted a 1.55 ERA. In the last previous road trip, to Miami and Cincinnati, Rockies starters finished with a 9.87 ERA.

June 26: Brewers 10, Rockies 4 -- Tapia's on-base streak
Raimel Tapia singled to begin Saturday's game -- he would steal second and score -- to run his streak of reaching base to 21 games, which is tied with the Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts for the longest current streak in the Majors. The Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes, who went 0-for-1 Saturday against the Cardinals, had his streak of 29 games snapped.

June 25: Brewers 5, Rockies 4 -- Gray makes club K history
Right-hander Jon Gray struck out 10 in just five innings while his pitch count (83) was closely watched in his return from the injured list. Gray matched Pedro Astacio for tops in club history with 15 games of at least 10 strikeouts. He also improved his strikeout total to 752 to surpass Astacio (749) for third place in Rockies history. Gray is within reach of Ubaldo Jiménez, whose 773 strikeouts are second on the club list. Jorge De La Rosa leads with 985 K's for the Rox.

June 23: Rockies 5, Mariners 2 -- Story's multi-HR game
Trevor Story notched his 16th career multi-home run game on Wednesday with his solo shot in the fourth inning and two-run blast in the eighth inning. It was his first multi-home run effort since July 26, 2020, a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers. Among Rockies hitters, Story ranks seventh all-time in multi-home run games, just one game back from tying Andres Galarraga for sixth all-time. The most is 28 by Todd Helton.

June 22: Mariners 2, Rockies 1 -- Nuñez nabs another one
Rockies catcher Dom Nuñez earned his seventh caught stealing of the season after nabbing Kyle Seager, who attempted to steal second following a four-pitch walk. Not only did Nuñez tie fellow backstop Elias Díaz, it also put him among the leaders for most caught stealings in the National League. Both Nuñez and Díaz round out the top 10 -- they are the only pair of teammates in the top 10 in the NL.

June 20: Brewers 7, Rockies 6 -- Homer happy Rox
On April 2, the Dodgers' Trevor Bauer went into the seventh inning hitless, but then the Rockies parked four home runs to tie a club record for most in an inning. However, the Rockies lost that game. On Sunday, the Rockies entered the sixth with no runs and two hits, but hit four home runs in the inning to tie the game at 6. Again, the Rockies lost, making them 0-2 in games in which they've hit four homers in an inning.

June 19: Brewers 6, Rockies 5 -- Storybook homestand
After returning from an elbow injury during the Rockies' last road trip, Trevor Story went 0-for-14. It was originally 1-for-14, but a scoring change even took that away from him. Now, he's more than making up for it. After going 2-for-4 with his 13th stolen base of the season on Saturday, Story has hit safely in all six games of the current homestand, going 9-for-21 (.429) with five walks, no strikeouts and four stolen bases.

June 18: Rockies 6, Brewers 5 -- Mile-high walk-offs
C.J. Cron's 10th-inning RBI single gave the Rockies their MLB-leading seventh walk-off victory of the season -- one more than the Athletics. Now, considering that the Athletics have the American League's best record and the second-best mark overall, their number is not surprising. If you don't know the Rockies, you're shocked. How does a team 11 games under .500 win so many thrillers. But then you see that the Rockies are 25-14 at Coors Field, and it makes total sense.

June 17: Rockies 7, Brewers 3 -- Charlie's 5K run
Charlie Blackmon had a quiet night at the plate in the Rockies' win, going 0-for-4. But his fourth plate appearance was one for the books -- it was Blackmon's 5,000th plate appearance in the Majors, all with Colorado.

June 16: Rockies 8, Padres 7 -- Tapia's two-baggers
Raimel Tapia had two doubles during his 3-for-5 performance in Wednesday's win. Not only did Tapia extend his hit streak to a career-best 13 games (27-for-60, .450), but he recorded his 12th two-bagger of the streak. That's the most by any player in Rockies history over a 13-game period.

June 15: Rockies 8, Padres 4 -- Hampson tough on lefties
With his pinch-hit triple to lead off the seventh inning against left-handed reliever Tim Hill, the Rockies' Garrett Hampson is 23-for-66 (.348) -- with three of his five triples -- against lefty pitching this season. Hampson also is 3-for-8 with a home run, a triple and a double as a pinch-hitter.

June 14: Rockies 3, Padres 2 -- No free passes
Lefty Austin Gomber walked seven Dodgers in three innings in his Rockies debut on April 4 -- alarming considering his work over two seasons with the Cardinals and in Spring Training. But since walking 19 in 23 innings in April, Gomber has walked four in 53 1/3 innings. With his walk-less outing Monday, Gomber joined Jeff Francis as the only Rockies pitchers with nine straight starts with no walks or one walk.

June 13: Reds 6, Rockies 2 -- Tapia, Blackmon go streaking
Raimel Tapia went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting steak to 10 games (21-for-56, .457), and Charlie Blackmon went 1-for-4 to run his hit streak to 12 games (19-for-44, .432), while adding a sacrifice fly in the series finale at Great American Ball Park.

June 12: Reds 10, Rockies 3 -- Rockies in search of road remedy
The Rockies fell to 5-26 on the road, tied with the 2005 squad for the worst mark after 31 games in club history. There is time for the '21 iteration of the club to do a little better. The '05 team went 5-31 before their sixth victory, and ultimately finished 27-54 away from Coors Field.

June 11: Reds 11, Rockies 5 -- Infield has bright power future
Ryan McMahon's three-run homer in the sixth inning was his sixth home run on the road this season. Rookie Brendan Rodgers' eighth-inning solo shot was his second of the current road trip. Those two away homers tie him for second-most on the team. The Rockies now have 15 homers on the road this season, compared to 41 at home.

June 10: Marlins 11, Rockies 4 -- Tapia happy with streak
Raimel Tapia extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the eighth inning, and he even enjoyed a jovial moment with Jesús Aguilar during the series finale. Tapia is batting .459 (17-for-37) during that stretch with eight doubles and five RBIs. His eight doubles since June 2 is the most in the Majors, ahead of J.P. Crawford’s six.

June 9: Rockies 4, Marlins 3 -- Black in rare company
Manager Bud Black, who is in his fifth season as Rockies manager, earned his 300th win with the club. He is the third manager in Rockies history to reach 300, trailing Clint Hurdle (534) and Don Baylor (440). In 14 seasons as a big league manager, Black has 949 career wins.

June 8: Marlins 6, Rockies 2 -- Blackmon 2nd in hits behind Helton
Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon doubled to left-center field against Pablo Lopez in the fourth inning. It was career hit No. 1,362. Blackmon is now second in all-time hits in franchise history behind Todd Helton.

June 6: Rockies 3, A's 1 -- Márquez's consistency streak
With another great performance Sunday, Germán Márquez became the second pitcher in Rockies history to make at least four consecutive starts in which he went at least six innings, allowed one or no runs and four or fewer hits. The other? His teammate, Jhoulys Chacín, who achieved the feat in 2011.

June 5: A's 6, Rockies 3 -- Tapia's rocket arm
Raimel Tapia threw out Oakland's Aramis Garcia at the plate in the second inning of Saturday's game at Coors Field with a 93.9 mph assist. It was Tapia's fifth assist of the season, most among National League left fielders.

June 4: A's 9, Rockies 5 -- Trejo's night to remember
Alan Trejo hit his first career home run on Friday night off A's reliever Burch Smith. With the blast, Trejo became just the 14th Rockie to notch his first home run in Interleague Play. Two of his predecessors were in the lineup alongside him - Charlie Blackmon did it on July 1, 2011, against the Royals, and Yonathan Daza accomplished the feat earlier this season against the Astros.

June 3: Rockies 11, Rangers 6 -- Gomber toughs his way to club history
Lefty Austin Gomber was sent home early Wednesday because of a stomach bug and didn't feel well Thursday. But he said his start wasn't in doubt. All Gomber did was hold the Rangers scoreless for six innings, with six strikeouts, to improve his home ERA to 1.33 through four starts. The only Rockies pitcher with a lower ERA through his first four starts at Coors was Julian Tavarez (0.96).

June 2: Rockies 6, Rangers 3 -- Tapia regains mojo
Raimel Tapia came in from the wilderness with three hits -- including two doubles -- and three RBIs. He was hitting .320 through May 2, but in the 26 games since, he had hit .186 (18-for-97).

Tapia had gone nine games without a multi-hit performance. The hits against the Rangers included a well-placed double to left-center in the fifth, a bloop to center that brought in two runs in the sixth and an opposite-way single to drive in an eighth-inning run.

June 1: Rockies 3, Rangers 2 (11) -- Blackmon ties Walker
Charlie Blackmon played in his 1,170th game with the Rockies to tie Hall of Fame inductee Larry Walker for third-most in franchise history. Blackmon went 1-for-4 to improve his hit total to 1,352 -- nine behind Walker's total with the club. Blackmon also has current productivity to go with his longevity. Since May 1, he has hit .307 and has a .843 OPS.
