CLEVELAND – The apparent gift for a first anniversary in Major League Baseball is the home run.

At least that’s what received and produced in a crucial 3-1 victory over the Guardians Saturday night at Progressive Field. Montgomery’s blast leading off the eighth against Tim Herrin was his eighth this season against a southpaw, his team-leading 22nd overall and punctuated 365 days in the Majors after being initially called up on July 4, 2025, in Colorado.

Montgomery has 43 career homers, following his first on July 22, 2025. Only Kyle Schwarber (54) and Junior Caminero (46) have more since that date.

The White Sox (46-42) pulled even with the Guardians atop the American League Central, winning for the first time after two walk-off setbacks, and remain the only team in Major League Baseball to not have a losing streak of four games or more this season.

White Sox right-hander deserved to win Saturday night, setting a career high with 11 strikeouts. Burke didn’t issue a walk and pitched out of trouble on three occasions to keep the White Sox even with Cleveland. But Burke had to settle for a no-decision, which contributed to the close of the South Siders’ 9-game losing streak at Progressive Field. Prior to Saturday, they last won in Cleveland on July 3, 2024.

Montgomery drove in the game’s first run with a double to left against All-Star Parker Messick in the first inning. Miguel Vargas, the White Sox lone All-Star representative, scored after drawing a leadoff walk.
