Red Sox place Early on IL with left elbow inflammation

BOSTON – The Red Sox placed left-hander on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation on Wednesday, a day after he exited his start in an 8-1 loss to the Nationals at Fenway Park with the injury.

The club activated lefty from the 15-day IL and recalled lefty from Triple-A Worcester in corresponding moves.

Entering the night, Red Sox rotation members had produced 12 straight quality starts, just two shy of the club record set in 1988. Nobody could have predicted the streak would end with the rookie Early being forced to depart after four scoreless innings.

Early, who has been thriving of late, along with the rest of Boston’s rotation, underwent imaging on Wednesday.

Early said he felt the discomfort on his final pitch of the night.

“It's tough,” said Early. “I thought I was throwing the ball really well. I felt really good going into the game, so just a little unfortunate thing that happened there.”
