LOS ANGELES -- The Yankees' search for pitching depth is continuing, as the club acquired right-hander Cory Gearrin off waivers from the Mariners on Friday and added him to the 40-man roster.

Gearrin, 33, appeared in 48 games (two starts) with Seattle this season, logging a 3.92 ERA in 41 1/3 innings (18 earned runs). Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that Gearrin could see some innings with the club after rosters expand on Sept. 1.

"We're excited to get him, a guy who is really tough on right-handed hitters," Boone said. "Hopefully there are some things we can do with him that will help him improve on his game a little bit."

This year with Seattle, right-handed batters hit .227 (22-for-97) off Gearrin, while lefties hit .281 (16-for-57).

In 318 career appearances (two starts) over eight Major League seasons with the Braves (2011-13), Giants (2015-18), Rangers (2018), Athletics (2018) and Mariners (2019), Gearrin has combined to go 12-11 with five saves and a 3.59 ERA.

"We do think he can help us," Boone said. "He’s a guy who can certainly play a role."

In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees released right-hander Domingo Acevedo, who was once listed among the organization's top prospects but has experienced a drop in velocity and lack of control.

Acevedo was 8-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 32 relief appearances between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.
