This time, it counted.

After going deep twice and earning Most Valuable Player honors at the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Denver on July 11, Brennen Davis collected the first multihomer game of his career and established a personal best with five RBIs as Double-A Tennessee outslugged Rocket City, 12-8, at Toyota Field.

MLB's No. 45 overall prospect has gone deep four times in his last four games to reach double figures for the first time in his professional career.

"For a sport that is so difficult, baseball can be simple sometimes," Davis said. "I got pitches to hit. Sometimes you connect, sometimes you don't. Tonight I did and it benefited me and the team."

In the midst of a scorching July, Davis showed no signs of letting up against the Trash Pandas. Getting a partial day off as the Smokies' designated hitter, the 21-year-old clubbed an 0-2 offering over the fence in right-center field for his career-high ninth home run. Davis didn't need to wait long for his next shot, this time going to left for a three-run blast and his fourth long ball in 14 at-bats.

That doesn't take into account he two balls he deposited into the seats at the Futures Game, where Davis felt right at home.

"Going deep twice in the Futures Game was a real treat," Davis said. "Just the entire atmosphere of the event was awesome. Being around players like that ... such high-quality guys was surreal. Those are the types of guys I want to play with and play against. I was thrilled to be a part of the Futures Game and I didn't take it for granted that I was there."

The second-ranked Cubs prospect's 12th multi-hit performance of the season lifted his slash line in July to .345/.438/.818 with six home runs and 16 RBIs in 55 at-bats. Of Davis' 19 hits this month, 14 have gone for extra bases. Hit in the head with a pitch during Spring Training, the Chandler, Ariz., native didn't make his 2021 debut until May 22, nearly three weeks after the start of the Minor League campaign.

He earned a quick promotion to Double-A but struggled in his first month with Tennessee, hitting .232 with a .705 OPS in June despite a four-hit game on June 17. However, Davis' bat has heated up with the weather. After his performance Wednesday, the 2018 second-round Draft pick is batting .285/.389/.552 with 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 28 RBIs in 47 games with High-A South Bend and Tennessee this season.

"The big thing is just getting more of the season under me and getting the at-bats," Davis said regarding his early-season struggles. "The transition from High-A to Double-A is tough. The pitchers are better and adjustments need to be made. There's going to be good days and bad days. I try to just keep things even and not ride the wave. I've seen other players try and it can make them pretty miserable."

Cubs' No. 7 prospect Christopher Morel joined Davis in the long ball parade, notching his second two-homer game of the season and of his career, driving in four runs.

"We joke around a lot and call each other 'big guy,'" Davis said of his relationship with Morel. "But we're always pumping each other up and have each other's backs. He pushes me and I push him. It makes for a good atmosphere. After he hit that second homer, we shared a nice laugh. It was fun out there tonight."
