After a short conference on the mound with pitching coach Chris Bosio, athletic trainer Ed Halbur and manager Joe Maddon, Edwards handed over the ball and returned to the dugout. He was replaced by , who closed out the inning to keep the Cubs ahead by eight.
"It could have been a cramp," Maddon said after Chicago evened the NLCS at two games apiece. "We're not 100 percent sure yet. It wasn't anything awful. I just talked to our trainer, and we've got to wait until tomorrow to see how he reacts to it. Talking to him in the clubhouse, he described it as being less than mild. So hopefully it was just a cramp."
"I'll be ready tomorrow," insisted Edwards.
Wednesday's appearance was Edwards' fifth of the postseason. He hasn't allowed a run in 3 2/3 innings.
