Coghlan day to day with mild left ankle sprain

PITTSBURGH -- Cubs outfielder left Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Pirates in the fifth inning with a mild left ankle sprain suffered when he crashed into the left-field wall. The Cubs wanted to see how he responded overnight, and Coghlan was not expected to play Thursday.
"The word 'mild' was used five to six times when I was told about it," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "He wanted to stay in the game, and I didn't think that was right. Let's get some ice on it. When a guy's swinging the bat, they want to hit. It's probably a day-to-day item."
Rookie took over in left field. The Cubs were already short-handed because has been sidelined with soreness in his right side.
