SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Cubs held off the Rangers, 10-9, in a Futures Game between the two teams at Surprise Stadium. The game was limited to Minor League players who have never reached the Majors.
Second baseman Ian Happ, the Cubs' No. 1 pick in the 2015 Draft, and catcher Victor Caratini both hit home runs for the Cubs. Outfielder Nomar Mazara, who was sent down by the Rangers earlier this week, also went deep, and Lewis Brinson had a double and a triple. Cubs outfielder Mark Zagunis, first baseman Dan Vogelbach and catcher Willson Contreras each had two hits.
Carl Edwards, traded by the Rangers to the Cubs in 2013, started for the visitors and pitched a scoreless inning against his former organization. Dillon Maples also pitched a scoreless inning, striking out three.
Rangers left-hander Brett Martin struck out the side in his inning of work, and right-hander Dillon Tate, the fourth overall pick in last year's Draft, pitched a scoreless inning, striking out two.
