It’s been a tough go for Cubs lefty Justin Steele as he works his way back from an elbow surgery that ended his season in 2025, but he received an unexpected pick-me-up this week that might make things a little easier.
Steele posted to social media on Monday a brief message: “Be right back. Crying. Cubs fans are the absolute best.”
Accompanying that caption were two photos of a letter Steele received from a young Cubs fan, who identified himself as Tommy Lynch of Orland Park, Ill. The front of the card had a simple “Get well soon” message with a hand-drawn “W” flag that is so iconic around Wrigleyville. The message on the inside is what melted Steele’s heart.
Dear Justin Steele,
I am NOT looking for an autograph. I wanted to write you a get well soon card. I have been a diehard Cubs fan since the moment I was born. I watch the Cubs all the time, and it is much more exciting when you are pitching. I can’t wait until the second half of the season when you are expected to return.
Don’t push it too much to get back really soon or you might get injured again. I love watching you pitch, and you’re amazing! I don’t know if you believe in God, but I do, and I am praying for you.
From,
Tommy Lynch
Steele still has a chance to return to the Cubs this season, though after a few setbacks, it would likely only be in short stints as a reliever rather than as a starter. As he continues his rehab in the meantime, perhaps he’ll make sure to get an autograph to Tommy anyway.
