Descalso 'had a blast' playing for Italy in Classic

New D-backs infielder reflects on experience

PHOENIX -- D-backs infielder played in some big games during his time with the Cardinals -- including four National League Championship Series and a pair of World Series -- so he knows what they feel like.
Ask him about his recent experience in the World Baseball Classic and he rates it pretty high on the list.
"I had a blast," said Descalso, who played for Team Italy, which was eliminated in the first round. "It was a lot of fun. Probably besides the World Series, the most fun I've had putting a baseball uniform on. Just from the group of guys we had, to the atmosphere, to players representing their countries, the whole mix of it made it a great experience."

Descalso returned to D-backs camp on Wednesday, then started and homered in Thursday's 8-5 loss to the Brewers.
Descalso contemplated whether he should play in the World Baseball Classic or not, because as an offseason free-agent signing, he's still trying to get to know his Arizona teammates. But in the end, he felt he couldn't turn down the opportunity.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said the organization completely supported Descalso's decision.
"In my discussions with Daniel, he mentioned that those are some of the most intense games he's ever played in, and that includes the playoffs and World Series," Lovullo said. "So when you can drop yourself into that environment and forum, and represent your country, to me it's a no-brainer."
