MIAMI -- D-backs center fielder Gregor Blanco left Thursday's 3-2 victory over the Marlins in the fourth inning with a jammed left thumb. He injured the thumb chasing a Giancarlo Stanton single in the third inning. A run scored on the hit and the ball got past Blanco after right fielder Chris Owings' fielding error, allowing a second run to cross the plate.
Blanco jammed the thumb reaching down for the ball. He was slightly off balance from the long run and jammed it into the ground attempting to brace himself as he tried to track it down.
"I feel like I just put all my weight on my thumb," Blanco said. "It kind of got numb. When I grabbed the ball, I didn't feel it in my hand."
Blanco remained in the game and took his turn at bat in the fourth inning, leading off with a groundout to short. But he did not go out to his position in the bottom half of the inning. Rey Fuentes replaced Blanco in center field.
"I tried to play through it, maybe finish the game," said Blanco, who added that during his subsequent at-bat he was simply trying to slap the ball and didn't have much force behind his swing. It was at that point that he knew he needed to come out. "I'm not going to help the team today like that."
Blanco began the season in the Minor Leagues on the disabled list with a strained oblique. He was selected from Triple-A Reno on May 5. Blanco said he would see how he feels Friday and go from there.
