PHOENIX -- Newly acquired D-backs outfielder J.D. Martinez saw his first action since being hit in the left hand with a pitch in his Arizona debut last Wednesday when he pinch-hit and drew a walk in the seventh inning of Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Nationals.
Martinez was out of the lineup Sunday and had not been available to pinch-hit since the injury, but D-backs manager Torey Lovullo has said before each game that Martinez was a possibility to pinch-hit. That was more just an attempt to have opposing managers think he might be available late in games.
"J.D. is taking batting practice, and he has been trending upward. Things are looking very positive about how he feels," Lovullo said before Sunday's game. "He's not in the starting lineup today."
Lovullo said he expects Martinez to be back in the starting lineup at some point during the three-game series with the Braves which begins Monday night.
Reliever Rubby De La Rosa (right shoulder inflammation) threw an inning Saturday night for Triple-A Reno as part of his injury rehab assignment. He allowed two earned runs on three hits in one inning.
"He came out of it feeling very good," Lovullo said. "I know the line score didn't look great, but the stuff was very good. All the reports indicate that he came out of it healthy. We'll get an idea of how he feels moving forward today when he gets to the ballpark in Reno. "I'm not sure exactly what the next step is. We've just got to see how he's feeling and see how he's doing post-outing."
Right-hander Taijuan Walker returned from paternity leave Sunday and lefty Anthony Banda, who started Saturday night's game, was optioned to Reno.
Walker will slot back into the rotation Tuesday against the Braves.
