Collmenter progressing toward early-May return

PHOENIX -- D-backs pitcher Josh Collmenter continues to make progress and could rejoin the team sometime during the 10-game road trip that starts in Miami on May 3.
The right-handed pitcher, who began the season on the disabled list because of shoulder tightness, will pitch an inning in an extended spring game Monday, and then two innings Thursday. He's tentatively scheduled to pitch three innings for Class A Visalia on May 2.
"We will see how he feels and we'll see how the ball is coming out of his hand," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "We'll see if he is getting outs. Those will all be important things."
Collmenter's rehab has consisted primarily of rest and working on body-mechanics exercises to loosen up his core and shoulder. He did not have any surgical procedures.
"Everything feels better, a lot better a lot more normal, so throwing off the mound a couple of times is nice," Collmenter said. "It was good that it wasn't anything where I had to take a lot of time off. I think I only took a couple of days off of throwing, and then I would throw and maybe give it a day's break, and two days of throwing and then off. Now, it's pretty much throwing every day, and it feels good."
Last season, Collmenter pitched 121 innings in 44 games, including 12 starts. Overall, he's started 75 of the 185 games he's pitched in for the D-backs since making his debut in 2011. He's thrown 637 innings for the D-backs in his career.
"It's one thing pitching every day and throwing 110 pitches. It's different when you throw 60 one day, and two days later, you are throwing 40, and three days later, you are throwing 70," Hale said. "It's not easy on your body. Maybe it's the best thing that could happen to him."
