SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Even though the lockers in the Salt River Fields clubhouse have been set up for months now, it was hard not to notice that one of the few open lockers rested between No. 27 and No. 30.
In case you've forgotten, free-agent outfielder J.D. Martinez wore No. 28 for the D-backs last year.

"You guys pay attention," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said with a smile when asked whether there was any significance to the open locker. "I think 28 and 29 are numbers that are available. I don't know. I've said it many times: J.D. was a huge part of our ballclub last year, and I know that there's 30 teams that are available to him, and I'll leave it at that. I don't know anything else."

It seems a longshot that Martinez would be able to return to the D-backs, but until he signs elsewhere, Arizona fans will grab onto any glimmer of hope.

They are not alone, as D-backs players have texted Martinez to let him know they would love to have him back.
"There's an open locker over there," D-backs reliever Archie Bradley said with a laugh. "I'll let you guys read whatever you want into that."
Attendance
Pitchers Antonio Bastardo and Neftali Feliz were the only pitchers to miss Wednesday's first workout. Lovullo said the pair had some paperwork issues in the Dominican Republic, but are expected to be in camp soon.
Greinke good to go

Because last spring was longer to accommodate the World Baseball Classic, the D-backs took things slow with ace Zack Greinke, as he was one of the last starters to throw a bullpen session.
This year, though, Greinke appears to be on schedule with the rest of the starters. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday and is scheduled to throw another one Thursday.
"Zack is healthy and ready," Lovullo said.
Slow pace for Sherfy and Delgado
The D-backs are taking things slowly with relievers Jimmie Sherfy and Randall Delgado.
Sherfy, who made his big league debut in August and became a bullpen mainstay, experienced some triceps tightness in the final week of the season. He did end up being put on the team's postseason roster.
Delgado missed the second half of last season with a flexor strain.
"Both are scheduled to throw in the coming days," Lovullo said. "But it's exactly the way we predicted, and things are progressing at exactly the right pace."

The D-backs are scheduled to take the field to begin stretching a little after 9 a.m. MT on Thursday, weather permitting. Greinke and Yoshihisa Hirano are among those scheduled to throw bullpen sessions.
