Goldy joins D-backs lore with 1,000th hit

September 14th, 2017

PHOENIX -- was not going to go there.
The D-backs' first baseman was not about to talk about a personal accomplishment like 1,000 career hits. Especially after an 8-2 win over the Rockies that increased his club's lead over Colorado to four games in the National League Wild Card race.
"No," Goldschmidt said when asked whether he could reflect on his 1,000th hit. "I don't care. It's better than 999, but it doesn't really matter. It is what it is. It's a hit. The only thing I care about is trying to win that game. I'm glad we won."
D-backs' all-time hits leaders
Ask him about the performance of starter , and he'll be happy to praise the lefty. Inquire about a big night from outfielder A.J. Pollock, and Goldschmidt will heap praise on him.
But the double off the center-field wall in the third that gave him 1,000 hits was not something he was going to dwell on.
"It's awesome," Pollock said of Goldschmidt's milestone. "He was quick to get there. He's been a fun guy to play with. I've been fortunate to play with him since 2009. He's an excellent player, and he's going to have a lot more hits, too."
Goldschmidt is just the second player to collect 1,000 hits in a D-backs uniform, joining former outfielder Luis Gonzalez. And if you check the D-backs' record book, you will find Gonzalez and Goldschmidt 1-2 in just about every category.
"It's one of those things I think you may reflect on it when it's over, whether it's the season or a career," Goldschmidt said. "It's never been a goal to try to get any individual milestones. Plus, it's just an arbitrary number. Why does 1,000 mean anything? It'll probably be something, I don't know, after the year or my career, I'll go, 'Oh, that was cool,' but that will honestly probably be the extent of it."
Since Goldschmidt made his Major League debut on Aug. 1, 2011, he has the 14th most hits in the Majors.
Goldschmidt did flash his sense of humor when he was asked at the end of the interview whether he would be excited about his 2,000th hit.
"It's better than 1,000," he said.
