BOSTON -- Evaluating the performance of D-backs starter Patrick Corbin this year is complicated by the fact that the defense has not played well behind him, which has resulted in a Major League-leading 20 unearned runs allowed.
The evaluation process is particularly relevant with Arizona deciding whether the left-hander should remain in the rotation with all his recent struggles.
D-backs manager Chip Hale said Corbin's status has been the topic of continuing discussions between him, general manager Dave Stewart and chief baseball officer Tony La Russa.
"We're going to do the best thing, obviously, for the ballclub and for Patrick," Hale said. "But we haven't made any decisions yet. The guy is busting his tail out there. He cares. I know where his heart is. His heart is with the club. We win as a club, and we lose as a club. He knows that. Maybe sometimes he's trying too hard to pitch out of his problems."

• D-backs right-hander Rubby De La Rosa had the MRI of his ailing elbow read by team physician Gary Waslewski, but before commenting on it, Hale said that Waslewski was going to consult with noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
It was Andrews who performed Tommy John surgery on De La Rosa in 2011. De La Rosa, who has been on the DL since late May with right elbow inflammation, was recently shut down from his rehab stint when he experienced tightness in his forearm and elbow.
