DENVER -- Brandon Drury's time with Triple-A Reno did not last very long, as the infielder/outfielder was recalled on Friday afternoon to take the roster spot of outfielder Socrates Brito, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right big toe.
Drury was optioned to Reno last Sunday and played three games with the Aces.
"When I get in there, I'm going to make the most of it and just play hard and be ready to go every day," Drury said. "That's what I can control, so that's what I'm going to control."
Because Brito can play center field, he had been promoted from Reno when Drury was sent down; the team has no true center fielder on the 25-man roster outside Michael Bourn.
Now it appears that backup catcher Chris Herrmann will double as the backup in center.
"Brandon will have a chance to play some second, some third base and, obviously, corner outfield," manager Chip Hale said. "We need to get him at-bats. We'll try to get him in there tomorrow against [Colorado starter Jorge] De La Rosa."
Brito fouled a ball off his foot in Thursday night's win and realized the following inning, when he ran out to the outfield, that he was injured. It is not known how long he will be on the DL.
• Shortstop Nick Ahmed was out of the lineup on Friday for the second straight day with what Hale called "hip issues."
"It's not that he can't play," Hale said. "We're trying to give him a couple of days off to rest it and calm it down. He'll probably be back in there [on Saturday]. We're going to be very careful about not overplaying him. That's why you're seeing [Jean Segura] back at short a little bit."
