SAN FRANCISCO -- D-backs manager Chip Hale made it official: Right-hander Shelby Miller will be recalled from Triple-A Reno and start Wednesday's game against the Giants.
"What it came down to was him starting the game in Reno last Thursday," Hale said before Tuesday night's game at AT&T Park. "It was time to get him back up here and get him another month up here. Hopefully he will be one of the five come Spring Training."
Miller had a 7.14 ERA in 14 starts with the D-backs before being optioned to Reno on July 14. In eight starts with the Aces, he went 5-1 with a 3.91 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings.
Reno manager Phil Nevin reported seeing good things out of Miller.
"Phil was happy with the way he pitched," Hale said. "He's been an unbelievable teammate, helping the younger pitchers."
Miller has allowed 27 hits over his past 20 innings, but has been able to avoid the big inning, something that concerned Hale.
"He's been able to handle guys on base," Hale said. "He's stopped the bleeding. He has good numbers down there and deserves the opportunity to come back and pitch."
Miller, an All-Star with the Braves last season, was acquired in the offseason for outfielder Ender Inciarte, right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair and shortstop Dansby Swanson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 Draft.

Campos optioned to Triple-A
Following the D-backs' 4-3 win over the Giants on Tuesday night, the club optioned right-hander Vicente Campos to Reno, clearing a roster spot for Wednesday's expected addition of Miller.
Campos, 24, made his Major League debut with the D-backs on Saturday and worked 5 2/3 innings vs. Reds, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
He was acquired from the Yankees on July 31 in the trade that sent Tyler Clippard to New York.
Worth noting
• Hale doesn't expect the club to make many moves when the rosters expand on Thursday. Catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann (strained left hamstring) is the closest to returning to action. He helped the Aces beat the RiverCats in Sacramento on Thursday night and will continute to play for them this weekend.
"We'll see how he feels," Hale said. "He's caught and played the outfield. We have to make sure his swing is OK."
