With the D-backs, Weeks is primarily going to play the outfield as he battles for one of the final roster spots.

"We'll let him compete out there," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "He's a veteran guy who knows how to play the game. It's always good to have guys like that in camp. They'll be able to help some of the younger guys. Somebody will pick his brain a little bit and figure something out for his own career. He's here to compete for a job."

Seattle signed Weeks as a free agent last February and he hit .167 in 95 plate appearances before being released on June 21.

Weeks' best season in the Majors was in 2011, when he hit .269 with 29 homers and 83 RBIs to go along with an .830 OPS.

He was an All-Star the following year, when he once again hit .269, this time with 20 homers and an .818 OPS.

Weeks will wear No. 5 with the D-backs.
