The D-backs have signed No. 7 overall Draft pick Pavin Smith, a first baseman from the University of Virginia, the club announced on Wednesday.
Smith signed for $5,016,300, per MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo, the full slot value for the seventh overall pick in the 2017 Draft.
The club also announced it has reached a deal with supplemental second-rounder Daulton Varsho, a catcher from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both Smith and Varsho will report to Class A Hillsboro.
Smith brings one of the most advanced bats in the Draft with him to the D-backs' organization, boasting a polished approach that led to him hitting .325/.402/.514 over his three years at Virginia. His best work came in his most recent season, when he posted more home runs (13) than strikeouts (12).
Smith immediately becomes the top first-base prospect in the D-backs' system and could move quickly through the Minors thanks to his advanced bat. While it's unlikely he's able to play a position other than first base, his chance at above-average hit and power tools should make him fit the first baseman profile in the pros.
Varsho, the son of former MLB outfielder and current Pirates scout Gary Varsho, has stand-out offensive upside at the catcher position. He boasts a short, yet powerful swing that should give him a chance to hit and hit for power. He's also fast for a catcher, both on the basepaths and behind the plate.
