Goldy's insanely hot bat leads D-backs to sweep

Perennial All-Star halts slump by going 16-for-25 on road trip

June 10th, 2018

DENVER -- This flight back to Phoenix will be far different than the last one for the D-backs.
When they returned from their last road trip, they did so carrying a 1-8 record and an offense that had lost its way.
After Sunday afternoon's 8-3 win over the Rockies at Coors Field, the D-backs head home having swept Colorado, and with a 4-2 mark on the road, which also included a stop in San Francisco, where they coughed up a ninth-inning lead in the final game of the series.
"Much better feeling this time," veteran infielder said. "Winning road trip, probably had a chance to go really 5-1 on the trip, but couldn't pull that one out in San Francisco. But, nice to come in and get a sweep after losing a tough one to the Giants."
Even more important, their offense, led by five-time All-Star first baseman , has been reignited.
"That was a tough time," Lovullo said of the 1-8 trip, which came during an 8-19 month of May. "This team showed a lot of toughness, and I was proud of them for that, because they never shut down, they never quit. We're on the other side of that now. You win three games here the way we did against this type of team, this atmosphere, you're doing a lot right and I'm proud of these guys. Considering what we've been doing, and where we came from about 10 days ago, it was a great moment for us to come in here and play the type of baseball we did."
Goldschmidt was 16-for-25 during the road trip with six doubles, a triple and four homers. In the series against the Rockies, he put 12 balls in play and nine had an exit velocity above 95 mph, which qualify as hard-hit balls.
"It's nice to see him get really hot," Descalso said. "It's fun to watch."

The D-backs scored 29 games in the series with the Rockies. On that 1-8 road trip, they scored a total of 18 runs, with seven coming in one game.
"This is a good place to hit," Descalso said of Coors Field. "But I thought we did a good job of taking good at-bats, taking the walks when they were there, getting it to the next guy. We hit some home runs, we hit a lot of extra-base hits, some big innings, answered some of their run-scoring innings after they scored. That's a good recipe for success obviously."

(6-5) bounced back from a rough start in San Francisco to get the win, allowing two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
"He was attacking the zone from pitch one to the last one that he threw," Lovullo said. "He was around the zone attacking with a three or four-pitch mix."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Bracho gets it done: Godley ran into some trouble in the sixth when drove home a pair of runs with a single to right. With two out and two on and the D-backs clinging to a 4-2 lead, Lovullo elected to bring in right-hander , who had thrown two innings Saturday night. Bracho struck out to end the threat and the D-backs tacked on three in the seventh to take command.

SOUND SMART
• D-backs second baseman 's home run in the second was his 10th straight extra-base hit, which tied a club record. The streak came to an end in the sixth when Marte singled to left. The last player to have an extra-base hit streak longer than 10 games was the Yankees' in September of last season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

• Per ESPN Stats & Info, Goldschmidt is the first player with multiple extra-base hits and multiple RBIs in four straight games since the leagues were split into divisions in 1969. The last player to accomplish the feat was Frank Howard, who did it with the Washington Senators in 1968.
HE SAID IT
"It came at a very good time, day game after a night game, maybe they were a little flat and we scored some early runs and got ahead and played downhill baseball. So, it was a good effort by him to set the tone." -- Lovullo, on Godley
