Pipeline Preview: Clarke looks to bounce back for Reno

August 9th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: David Thompson (Mets' No. 25), Binghamton vs. Erie (6:35 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Thompson homered for the second time in as many days on Tuesday as he hit a solo shot as part of a 1-for-3 effort in a win over Erie. The home run marked the second time this season Thompson has gone deep in back-to-back games. It was also his 11th homer of the season, which ties the career high he set across two levels in 2016.

Pitcher to watch: Taylor Clarke (D-backs' No. 3), Reno vs. Las Vegas (10:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Clarke is looking to get back on track after a rough introduction to the Triple-A level. The righty posted a 2.91 ERA in 21 starts with Double-A Jackson this season, but he was hit hard in his Triple-A debut, giving up eight earned runs in five innings.

Duel of the Day: Cal Quantrill (Padres' No. 2) vs. Austin Gomber (Cardinals' No. 15), San Antonio vs. Springfield (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Quantrill, the No. 43 overall prospect, has been decent since he was promoted to Double-A. The 22-year-old has posted a 4.18 ERA through four starts, two of which were quality starts. Prior to his promotion, Quantrill was 6-5 with a 3.67 ERA across 14 starts in the California League.

While Quantrill is still adjusting to Double-A ball, Gomber has been on a roll lately. The 23-year-old has given up two earned runs or fewer in four of his past five starts and is coming off a dominant outing against Northwest Arkansas. In his last start, Gomber fanned seven and yielded just two hits across seven scoreless innings.
