D-backs will rotate middle infielders

Segura, Ahmed, Owings all in the mix

April 2nd, 2016

PHOENIX -- As expected, the D-backs will go with a rotation of sorts when it comes to their middle infielders, with Jean Segura, Nick Ahmed and Chris Owings splitting time.
"Opening Day we'll see what it looks like, but they're all going to get chances to play," D-backs manager Chip Hale said.
Ahmed will see his time more at short than second because he is regarded as an elite defender there. Segura figures to see the most time of the trio, at least initially, because Hale has said he wants him to be the leadoff hitter and in order to do that he'll need consistent at-bats.
Hale said he's talked with all three and that Segura and Owings are OK with moving back and forth between second and short.
If Brandon Drury does not make the team, Owings might also see playing time at third when starter Jake Lamb gets a day off.
"I think it's going to depend on the matchup, the guys we're facing, the teams we're facing and who we want to have on the bench for later in the game," Hale said. "They're all going to get their at-bats. That's kind of what's been told to all of them."
On the DL
Josh Collmenter will open the season on the 15-day disabled list after experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder last weekend.
"Just really more tightness than anything," Hale said. "He said he did some stuff yesterday and his range of motion wasn't what he would like. We want him to be 100 percent, that's important."
It remains to be seen how long Collmenter will be out, but it's possible it could be less than 15 days because his stint could be backdated to his last appearance of the spring. That was March 27, which means he could miss as few as seven regular-season games.
"But he's got to get throwing again and get in some games but we'll see how long it takes," Hale said.
More explanation
Hale said that one of the main reasons the D-backs kept Chris Herrmann as the backup catcher rather than Tuffy Gosewisch was because Herrmann was out of Minor League options.
Had the D-backs tried to send him down he would have had to be placed on waivers.
Gosewisch was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
