NEW YORK -- Right-hander Daniel Mengden joined the A's in Cleveland on Monday to start the opener of a four-game series at Progressive Field, pitching in place of Kendall Graveman, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Friday, with a right shoulder strain.
Graveman is dealing with right shoulder soreness for the second time this season and is expected to be sidelined longer than his first DL stint, which spanned April 15-26.
The A's Opening Night starter will be shut down for the time being, and there's no telling when he'll begin throwing again. Graveman is 2-2 with a 3.83 ERA in eight starts.
"We've been through this once before, so we're going to let this thing calm down before he even starts some strengthening again, so this is probably going to be a little bit longer than last time," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "It's going to be about how he feels, and we want to make sure once he starts throwing again, he's not pushing through anything."

Mengden was viewed as a frontrunner in the rotation race ahead of Spring Training, before he had surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot. He was activated from the 60-day DL on May 20 and optioned to Triple-A Nashville, where he had already been making rehab starts.
Mengden, 24, tossed seven scoreless innings in his latest outing for the Sounds on Tuesday, striking out five and walking none.
He made his big league debut last year, going 2-9 with a 6.50 ERA in 14 starts over two stints with Oakland -- including a 2.81 ERA in four June starts and an 8.55 ERA in a combined 10 starts in July and September.
"He's got a great mix of pitches, he's got some deception in what he does, and when he's on, he's got a bright future ahead of himself," Melvin said. "It's about being consistent, and that's probably the one thing he missed out on last year, but that could have had something to do with the foot."
