Batted balls add injury to insult in loss

BOSTON -- Yet another disheartening A's loss on Monday was compounded by a laundry list of injuries.
Even before the start of their 14-7 loss to the Red Sox in the confines of Fenway Park, the A's knew they'd be without infielder/outfielder Mark Canha, who is dealing with back tightness, and right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks, who, manager Bob Melvin revealed after the game, was sidelined by elbow soreness.
Then the A's watched a pair of infielders depart early: first, third baseman Danny Valencia exited in the middle of the second inning after reinjuring his left hamstring; second baseman Jed Lowrie then departed ahead of the bottom half of the seventh after fouling a ball off of his right foot.
Valencia, who was nursing a strained left hamstring on the disabled list for the minimum 15 days up until Friday, is considered day to day. Lowrie also likely falls under that category, after his X-rays turned up negative.
Reliever John Axford underwent X-rays during the game, too, after taking a screaming liner off the bat of Xander Bogaerts in the sixth inning. X-rays on the right-hander's foot proved negative.
