Gehrig, DiMaggio, Ott, Foxx ... Swanson?! Hot streak has Cubs SS in elite company

Just in terms of runs batted in, it's been 87 years since we've seen the kind of run-production heater that Cubs shortstop is on right now.

Bouyed by his 15-RBI series against the Mets late last month and his three-homer, eight-RBI outburst versus the Padres on Wednesday, Swanson has driven in 26 runs over his past 10 games. That is the most RBIs by a Cubs player over a 10-game span since at least 1920, when RBIs first became official.

No player on any team has driven in that many runs through 10 games since 1939. Now, from 1929-39, four players recorded at least 26 RBIs over a 10-game stretch.

And what a quartet it is, as presented by the incomparable Sarah Langs:

Mel Ott. Lou Gehrig. Jimmie Foxx. Joe DiMaggio. Dansby Swanson. The 32-year-old has certainly had a solid career, with a couple of All-Star selections, a couple of Gold Gloves and a World Series title in 11 MLB seasons. Who knows where his career will go from here, but he is now attached to four of the absolute best hitters in the game's history.

And think of all of the great run producers who have graced baseball over the past 80-plus years. None of them can match what Swanson has done.

Not only is he besting all players -- Swanson is also driving in more runs than a full team. His 26 RBIs are one more than the Yankees have in total over their past 10 games entering Thursday.

"Kind of hard to explain," Swanson said after Wednesday's win about his recent surge, which has included five home runs in his past two games. "I don't really have any words for it other than just incredibly grateful. That's the only thing that can really come to my mind, just incredibly grateful."

So, who holds the record for most RBIs in an 11-game span? That would be Foxx and Ott, who drove in 29 runs over 11 games in 1933 and 1929, respectively. Foxx won the Triple Crown in '33.

We'll see if Swanson has three (or more) RBIs left in him when he and the Cubs host the rival Cardinals at Wrigley on Friday afternoon.
