SAN DIEGO -- Dansby Swanson got the Cubs’ scoring started on Tuesday night, but the shortstop was soon forced to make an early departure due to an injury.
In the second inning, Swanson stole third base against the Padres and initially remained in the game. Before the home half of the frame, second baseman Nico Hoerner shifted to shortstop in Swanson’s place and Nicky Lopez came off the bench to take over at second.
The Cubs announced that Swanson exited with a left glute cramp.
Prior to leaving the game, Swanson delivered a two-run double off San Diego righty Walker Buehler to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. It was a continuation of a recent hot streak for the Cubs shortstop, who entered the night hitting .260/.391/.600 with five homers, 15 RBIs and as many walks (11) as strikeouts (11) in his previous 15 games.
On the season, Swanson has hit .214/.344/.439 with six home runs, two doubles, one triple, 23 RBIs and 20 walks in 30 games for the North Siders.
