ARLINGTON -- David Dahl notched his first home run with the Rangers on Friday night.

Dahl connected on a 394-footer to right-center field in the bottom of the fifth inning of the Rangers’ 5-2 loss to the Orioles at Globe Life Field.

“It was good for him,” manager Chris Woodward said. “We're just trying to try to get him going. He's a big part of our offense, and to get him rolling will help our offense a ton. He puts some crooked numbers on the board, if he's swinging the bat well.”

The Rangers signed Dahl this offseason after he was non-tendered by Colorado, hoping to add elite talent in the outfield alongside Joey Gallo.

Dahl has played in left field and at designated hitter during the young season and has been a bright spot as one of Texas’ veteran players.

But he had yet to put one over the fence. Until now.

Woodward said Dahl is a “streaky” hitter and that’s likely why it took two weeks before he broke through for his first homer. Dahl is an aggressive hitter, which has sometimes works against him. Against Tampa Bay on Thursday, Dahl ended a five-game hitless streak with a 2-for-5 day.

Woodward pointed out that Dahl has been open to hitting adjustments, especially staying in the strike zone and being picky at the plate in crucial situations. When he’s at his best, Dahl is able to spread the ball across the field.

“If he does [stay in the strike zone], he's going to hit,” Woodward said. “He's got a really good swing. … He’s got good bat-to-ball [ability]. I feel like the only thing that gets him in trouble sometimes is if he expands. When he expands, he becomes a little bit vulnerable to good pitching. …

“Him staying in the strike zone, understanding that and being able to consistently do that, I think he won't be as streaky. He'll actually be streaky in a good way, where he's just consistently good, and that's what we want.”

Dahl and Nick Solak’s back-to-back solo homers were the extent of the offensive output for the Rangers on Friday. The Rangers got the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Woodward said he felt the game was lost in the beginning, when Texas was no-hit through four frames. The hot-hitting Solak was the only Rangers hitter with multiple hits.

"I just know that 15 punchouts and one walk on the offensive side isn't going to get it done,” Woodward said. “I'm not going to make excuses for our guys. We’ve got to get better. It’s professional baseball. You’re going to have to deal with stuff like that.”

Starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz is still searching for his first win with the Rangers. He made it through five innings against the Orioles, giving up five runs on seven hits (two homers). The Rangers’ bullpen was flawless in relief. Kolby and Brett Martin combined to allow no hits and no runs over four innings. Allard had five strikeouts.
