David Freese Game, 2011 World Series

October 27th, 2021

Today is the 10th anniversary of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series - AKA The David Freese Game. Here is a look back at that incredible night.

It is forever known as the David Freese Game in St. Louis, and beyond.

Game 6 of the 2011 World Series is on the short list of wildest contests in World Series history, with the Cardinals prevailing 10-9 in 11 innings. The Rangers -- who had lost the World Series to the Giants the previous year -- were on the verge of their first World Series title in franchise history, leading the Cardinals 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth.

The Rangers were ONE strike away from popping bottles. But Freese roped an opposite-field triple over Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz's head, scoring two runs to tie the game and send it into extra innings. You can watch the epic ninth inning in the video below.

Josh Hamilton put the Rangers back on top in the 10th with a two-run homer. Once again, the Rangers were three outs from glory.

But Cardinal Devil Magic was on full display. With St. Louis down to its final strike in the bottom of the 10th, Lance Berkman tied Game 6 with an RBI single. "They just won't go away," said FOX broadcaster Joe Buck.

The Rangers went scoreless in the 11th, and Freese led off the bottom half of the frame against Rangers righty Mark Lowe. Freese worked the count to 3-2, then became an October LEGEND.
