CHICAGO -- Needing bullpen length and depth with righty Christian Bergman making a spot-start in Colorado's 6-2 loss to the Cubs on Saturday afternoon, the Rockies summoned right-hander David Hale from Triple-A Albuquerque and placed catcher Nick Hundley on the seven-day concussion disabled list, retroactive to Thursday.
Hale, 28, replaced Bergman in the sixth and had his 1 2/3 innings marred by Dexter Fowler's three-run homer in the seventh. Hale gave up three hits, walked two and struck out one.
Hale was viewed as a competitor for a starting rotation spot going into Spring Training, but he suffered an early right hamstring injury and never became a factor. Hale made two starts at Albuquerque while building his pitch count. In the first start, he gave up one run over four innings and threw 72 pitches. He started Wednesday at Reno and was expecting to throw 85 pitches, but the Rockies pulled him and informed him he would be joining the big club in Chicago.
"The last start, I felt like I had all my pitches for the first time in a while, so I was happy with the way I was feeling," Hale said. "With the injury, I didn't lose much time throwing, which is a good thing. It was just getting all that [leg] strength."

• Hundley, hurt on a foul tip on Wednesday night, hit in the batting cage and attempted to do 10 sprints on Friday. However, he only made it through four before feeling woozy. It took the Rockies a while to reach the decision because Hundley felt good standing still. It took activity for symptoms to show. He also suffered a forehead contusion from the way the impact spun his mask.
Hundley said his only previous concussion was in 2012.
"That's been a long time," he said. "Fortunately, I haven't taken shots like that before. This one was different. I couldn't shake it off. I'm usually good to go. But this one, even after the game, it wouldn't go away."
• Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu was seen squatting and stretching intently on the infield just before the ninth inning of Friday's 6-1 victory over the Cubs. It turned out LeMahieu was experiencing groin tightness. Manager Walt Weiss started Cristhian Adames at second and in the leadoff spot Saturday, but LeMahieu remained available.
• Right-hander Jon Gray, on the 15-day disabled list with an abdominal strain, went four innings, gave up three runs and four hits and struck out eight in four innings Friday for Class A Modesto against Stockton. Gray is expected to join the team soon, and he checks out physically he will be added to the starting rotation -- most likely on April 22 against the Dodgers.
