MILWAUKEE – Brewers infielder David Hamilton began a Minor League rehab assignment by playing five innings for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday night, and if all goes well he will be back with the Brewers by the end of the week.
The plan called for Hamilton to play back-to-back games at Sugar Land (Texas), an Astros affiliate, before rejoining the Brewers for Friday’s afternoon series opener against the Rockies at American Family Field. He went 1-for-3 in his opening game Tuesday with a single, and was caught trying to steal second base.
The speedster has been on the 10-day injured list since going down with a strained left hamstring on July 6 in St. Louis. But he’s also been getting treatment for a sore right elbow, manager Pat Murphy said, which had bothered Hamilton prior to the hamstring injury.
Hamilton is slashing .240/.317/.333 in 74 games since coming back to the Brewers in a February trade with the Red Sox, and he has a .748 OPS since the start of June. He leads the Brewers with 18 stolen bases.
In other injury updates Tuesday:
• Outfielder Sal Frelick (right shoulder) underwent an arthrogram on Tuesday and will seek a second opinion before the Brewers set a timeline for his recovery.
"The first opinion was not anything major in terms of new news," Murphy said. "We knew he had some stuff in the labrum, some rotator cuff irritation. So, nothing that seemed to be Earth-shattering. But he’s putting it out for a second opinion."
• Left-hander Kyle Harrison (left elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Saturday simulating four innings, then would make a Minor League rehab start on July 31 if all goes well.
• DL Hall (left pectoral) is scheduled to make his next rehab appearance for Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday but still has some other hurdles to clear before the Brewers bring him back, including pitching in back-to-back games.
• Brandon Lockridge was set to travel to Sugar Land, Texas, on Wednesday to join the Sounds on a rehab assignment. Lockridge hasn’t played a game since suffering a laceration and bone bruise sliding into the wall down the left-field line at American Family Field on May 8.
