Peralta placed on 10-day injured list

Leyba recalled from Triple-A; Young to start first-half finale

PHOENIX -- The D-backs placed left fielder on the injured list Friday with inflammation in the AC joint of his right shoulder, the second time this season he has been forced out with that injury.

Peralta was removed after a painful checked swing in the third inning of a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday, and an MRI on Thursday showed inflammation remained, manager Torey Lovullo said.

Peralta is slashing .289/.352/.476 with 24 doubles, nine homers and 44 RBIs in 73 games. He was placed on the injured list for the first time May 24 (retroactive to May 22) and returned June 3.

“He fought hard to come back,” Lovullo said. “He probably wasn’t 100 percent, the athletes rarely are, but he wanted to get back and resume playing. He said it was lingering and he felt it, but he was managing it.

“What we’ve learned with David is, he’s such a team guy and wants to be out there. We are maybe going to slow play him until it is all done. He’s probably not going to have a great All-Star break. He’s going to be getting a lot of rehab and a lot of therapy.

“We can’t take another step back with this. If it happens and it is lingering, we’re missing a really good player. Probably one of our best players. We don’t want that to happen again.”

Peralta is eligible to return July 14, the final game of a three-game series in St. Louis.

Jarrod Dyson started in left field on Friday and Tim Locastro is likely see more time in left, Lovullo said. Locastro, hitting .238 with a .371 on-base percentage due to being hit by 13 pitches, started seven games the first time Peralta was on the injured list.

“Tim Locastro has been doing a fantastic job for us this year, so he is going to get a little more playing time,” Lovullo said.

Ketel Marte will play center field almost exclusively, Lovullo said, while Eduardo Escobar could see time at second base and Jake Lamb could play some third. Escobar made his first start of the season at second base Wednesday and started there again Friday.

Middle infielder Domingo Leyba was recalled from Triple-A Reno to replace Peralta on the roster.

Young to start Sunday
Rookie left-hander Alex Young will make his second career start against Colorado on Sunday, the final game before the All-Star break.

Young (1-0, 1.23 ERA) won his Major League debut at San Francisco on June 27, when he gave up one run and three hits in five-plus innings. Young retired all seven batters he faced in his second appearance, entering with two outs in the fourth inning against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

“He’s comfortable in his own skin, and that goes a long way when he’s on the mound,” Lovullo said. “He knows he can get to something because he believes in himself. On top of that, he has really good stuff. He deserved this opportunity.”
