SAN FRANCISCO -- D-backs leadoff man David Peralta was absent from the starting lineup for the second straight contest for Wednesday's matinee against the Giants. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo revealed Peralta is dealing with soreness in his left hand, an issue the outfielder dealt with near the end of Spring Training.
"He's playable," Lovullo said. "I made the decision to hold him out of the lineup and combine it with another day off [Thursday] to get him back to full strength as soon as possible. He's very close. Just made a lot of sense to hold him out."
Lovullo said Peralta is experiencing the pain between his left thumb and index finger, the result of repeatedly getting jammed by pitches while at the plate. The skipper said he's taking early precautions to help prevent the issue from lingering throughout the season.
Peralta has been a spark plug for his club to begin the year, slashing .316/.409/.500 while starting nine contests in left field. He's the latest D-backs slugger to be bit by the injury bug, as Jake Lamb (sprained left AC joint) is scheduled to hit soft toss on Thursday and Steven Souza Jr. (right pectoral soreness) remains sidelined in his rehab. Jarrod Dyson took Peralta's spot atop the lineup and in left field for the second straight contest on Wednesday.
Delgado struggles in second rehab appearance 
Right-handed reliever Randall Delgado was tagged for a pair of home runs while only recording two outs in his second rehab appearance for Class A Advanced Visalia on Tuesday. Lovullo said the team doesn't want to rush Delgado and plans to simulate a Spring Training-type workload for the right-hander before bringing him back into the fold.
"At this point in time, we're not so concerned about the results as we are with the way the stuff's coming out of his hand," Lovullo said. "His location is something that I'm sure is going to come along."
